This is only a rough comparison, designed to help you steer your way.

In reality, there are many different types of individual video production service, and lots of overlap between them.

Nonetheless, here are the basics you should know:

Marketing & PR agencies Initial creative & illustration design, inc script & storyboard.

They might do some editing if they’re large.

The key point is that as your marketing advisers, they’ll know what videos you’ll need. And they’ll get you a result.

They're accountable to you

Everything they don't do in-house.
Dedicated video studios They do most of the work, from concept, script, filming, editing & animation through to delivery.

The lower cost outfits will often expect you to provide all the script.

They almost all have a speciality - or three - that you may very well like.

They're accountable to you

Maybe the script.

Maybe some of the filming, editing or animation. It depends.

Maybe some subcontracting

Again, it depends on their in-house skill-sets.

Freelancers & solo producers They do whatever is within their core skill sets, whether editing, or initial concept, camera, creative etc

Accountability will vary a lot

Whatever isn’t in their skill set.

You’ll almost certainly be expected to write the script.

The above table isn’t intended as an absolute rule.

There are many variations.

But it does give you a broad overview of what may sometimes appear as a mysterious marketplace.

And putting out some work to trusty talented contractors can work in your favour, as your video producer can positively identify the most talented people for you, at each stage of the work.

Ad agencies are often keen to stress this.

You’ll probably find most video companies will work on a flexible model of some sort.

But all the same, it’s good to have an idea of who you’re talking to, their business model, and how they base their costs.

After all, you’re probably spending £1,000's of pounds, dollars or euros, so it’s critical you get best value to deliver an effective result.
