BUSINESS VIDEO MASTERCLASS
PART 3 - AVOIDING MISTAKES WHILE YOUR VIDEO IS BEING PRODUCED
Using style frames
Style frames or Reference Frames are typically 3 sample illustrations produced right at the beginning of storyboarding.
They’re intended to give you a flavour of the animated “video look”, prior to carrying out extensive detailed illustration.
Style frames may cover:
> illustration of your main animated characters to check they look right for you (too serious? too toy? too bland? too colourful?)
> the scenes, backgrounds or sets (too detailed? not detailed enough? Right or wrong colours/objects, etc)
> examples of charts or data graphics to be animated.
> Any key visual area, such as the “secret sauce” explanation in your video.
Seeing and approving Style Frames - in advance of the main illustrated storyboard - will enable you to check the video company is working to a style you absolutely love.
It also gives confidence to the designer/illustrator, knowing you like their work early on.
Nothing demotivates an illustrator faster than a client who keeps throwing out their work.
They respond by playing safe, offering blander and blander ideas, as they’re quietly living in terror of you by now. Believe it.
You want your designer eager to do their very best for you, not feel terrified.
With Style Frames approved in advance, you can all confidently march forward to the main storyboard.
NB: The rules on Style Frame approval apply just as much here in the later Visual Storyboard stage. Ensure your whole team approve the style frames.
This is how you avoid last minute big changes from the CEO or a specialist who'll make a mockery of your schedules and maybe your price, as major late revisions are time-consuming to fix.
Getting Style Frame, then Storyboard approval, from all parties is how you get perfection in your animated B2B video.
