6: Post production - the magic of the studio

This is largely studio work where you won’t be so involved, which is often a relief for many managers as all the preparation up to this stage is demanding and you probably need a break by now.

If you’ve covered the script and storyboard as shown in this Masterclass there’s no need for you to see endless proofs or visual checks, as the editor just has to carry out everything according to plan.

Video editors and animators can be strange creatures, full of talent, art & energy. Yet they’re often extraordinarily sensitive or nervous about their work, especially during mid-production.

It’s best to let them get on with it.

They’ll ask if they need clarification on any points.

Often they’ll start a dialogue with you anyway, regarding any missing company images they may need that you haven’t yet sent through.

Asking to see each day’s work is unnecessary. I takes them extra time to do, which contributes to delays while they wait for your approval instead of being allowed to get on with their job.

The look of your video
Once edited, so your video runs perfectly from end-to-end, a video editor has a lot of options on the look to give your video, especially where any filmed footage is used.

With filmed video, for example:

> faces can be cosmeticised, bad teeth, spots etc

> or scenes made brighter, or more dramatic, especially dull locations.

With animated or explainer video:

> extra sparkle or whoosh or pizzaz can be given. We call these motion elements.

> sound fx can be added to help with any potential dead spots.

What you’re looking for is this:

“Every image should be a Power Image”.

It’s no use being visually accurate but wishy washy. Every scene has to shout out to the audience “look at me, look at me!”

Power images also kill off Dead Spots.

This should have been sorted out at the storyboard stage of production.

This final stage of post production is where the look of your video can be finalised to perfection.
