BUSINESS VIDEO MASTERCLASS
PART 5 - GETTING FOREIGN LANGUAGE VERSIONS RIGHT
Getting the right accent
Your video company should find the best possible voiceover accent as a matter of course.
For example, a Hannover style accent is often seen as best for Germans, compared with a Hamburg or Munich accent (low or high German).
French often sounds best with an accent from somewhere between Paris and Tours.
Southern French might sound quite wrong, creating the wrong impression.
Another common question is whether you should have your English accent video redone for the US market?
I’d say yes.
The US is a giant market, and worth the spend.
It’ll help make American buyers feel they’re buying locally and not from someone 3,000 miles away.
And there are no costs for a full localisation with a US accent, except maybe altering infographic captions from “s” to “z”, and suchlike, eg, from capitalise to capitalize, or colour to color.
This is quick to do, and shouldn’t cost much, if it’s needed at all.
