It's a good example of when the safety advisor needs to increase their video budget to solve the problem more effectively, instead of opting for a low cost video alternative, which in this example, would be too generic, and less impactful.

WHAT DO SAFETY ADVISERS THINK OF ANIMATION
Animation commands their attention so it’s obviously more interesting than watching a standard video with real people.
Characters create images that are sometimes more memorable for individuals.
You can use the characters to soften the discussion so people don’t immediately lose face and become defensive.
Video footage of construction projects can be busy and distracting – looking at another company’s project, seeing all of the unrelated activity.
Animation doesn’t date as quick as actual video footage.
Generally, people see safety information as a chore so they remember little until they are challenged for doing something wrong.
Not using shock tactics as with some footage, keeps it light hearted. Basically it puts a smile on peoples faces.
Without the travel and location shooting costs, animation should be less expensive.
We think that with animation it’s easier to focus on the core message. There’s less distraction. And there’s the opportunity to add supporting graphics and figures speaking directly to the objective.
I don’t believe it delivers better safety but may be a better trigger for people to remember.
Actual video can become outdated quickly, especially if recognizable leaders are featured and then they change.
THE COLAS STORY
Living Goal Zero is the next stage in the development of infrastructure constructor, Colas Canada's safety culture across the North American continent.
The aim is for their 8,500 managers and operatives to quickly identify SIF (serious injury or fatality) precursor events, preventing accidents before they happen.
Launching this high profile campaign involved deep initial research to clearly identify what were found to be the 8 most common precursors to SIF events, which are called Icons.
The initial launch and cascade of information to managers was spearheaded by a video.
Animation was the preferred style as it's visually impactful, and quick to get the key messages across.
After its launch the video was subsequently produced in French Canadian to meet the needs of their multi-lingual workforce.

THE NSG STORY
This video module was part of glass giant, NSG's new international contractor induction.
They'd produced numerous safety videos before but always filmed - never as animation.
Frankly the animated approach appealed as it meant less work on their part, compared to lengthy onsite filming.
From the moment we suggested it, NSG liked the cartoon idea as the audience impact was obvious.
Costwise it worked out about the same.
Subsequently it was produced in Latin Spanish, Malay, Polish, Vietnamese and German.
Animation provokes disinterested audiences. It brings safety to life in a new way.
