Custom health & safety animation
This health & safety animation was custom-made to include original characters showing the impact of accidents and the importance of correct procedure, supported by custom scenes that exactly match the workplace. It raised awareness.
It's a good example of when the Health & Safety Advisor needs to increase their budget to solve the problem more effectively, instead of opting for a filmed video production, which in this example, would be too generic, and less impactful.
WHAT DO HEALTH & SAFETY ADVISORS THINK OF SAFETY ANIMATIONS
Animation commands their attention so it’s obviously more interesting than watching a standard video with real people.
Characters create images that are sometimes more memorable for individuals.
You can use the characters to soften the discussion so people don’t immediately lose face and become defensive.
Video footage of construction projects can be busy and distracting – looking at another company’s project, seeing all of the unrelated activity.
Animation doesn’t date as quick as actual video footage.
Generally, people see safety information as a chore so they remember little until they are challenged for doing something wrong.
Not using shock tactics as with some footage, keeps it light hearted. Basically it puts a smile on peoples faces.
Without the travel and location shooting costs, animation should be less expensive.
We think that with animated video it’s easier to focus on the core message. There’s less distraction. And there’s the opportunity to add supporting graphics and figures speaking directly to the objective.
I don’t believe it delivers better safety but may be a better trigger for people to remember.
Actual video can become outdated quickly, especially if recognizable leaders are featured and then they change.
THE COLAS STORY
Living Goal Zero is the next stage in the development of infrastructure constructor, Colas Canada's health & safety culture across the North American continent.
The aim is for their 8,500 managers and employees to quickly identify SIF (serious injury or fatality) precursor events, preventing accidents before they happen.
Launching this high profile campaign involved deep initial research to clearly identify what were found to be the 8 most common precursors to SIF events, which are called Icons.
The initial launch and cascade of information to managers was spearheaded with a series of health & safety videos.
Animation was the preferred style as it's visually impactful, and quick to get the key messages across.
After its launch it was subsequently produced in French Canadian to meet the needs of their multi-lingual workforce.
Traditionally inductions have been produced with film & camera, because specific areas of the site must be seen in order for contractors & new starters to understand the hazards & rules that apply there. Certainly, off-the-shelf presentations are too generic to tackle specific site issues & requirements.
A 3D Animated Presenter offers a new solution that’s easier to make, and costs a lot less than filming onsite.
See the sample in the row below.
You’ll notice that where a specific site location needs to be seen, such as a potentially hazardous area, a photograph or series of photographs are used - enough for the viewer to quickly recognise the area when they see it in real life.
This also works well when explaining site-specific personal protective equipment, PPE. Using photographs works.
Now take the electricity network, specifically lockout/tagout. Your workforce don’t need to see every lock & key to understand how & where lockout rules apply. A clear explanation with photographs, text & icons is just as effective.
This same principle can even be applied to moving vehicles in the yard, or road safety. A few graphic arrows and circles around a wagon in the yard can clearly illustrate any hazard, safe distances, walkways, potential risk situation, etc.
Also consider that much of the overall Induction Content will be rule-telling, such as obeying site signage or obeying general site rules (smoking, use of phones, waste disposal, etc). Ditto for health issues like asbestos or dust.
Animated icons and supporting highlight text captions do this job admirably.
The important point is that a graceful 3D Presenter is talking to your employees & contractors and involving them with body language, face expression and tone of voice.
1: The first big advantage is money as a 3D Presenter costs at least £1,000 less than film.
2: The instruction is very clear, precise and professional, while remaining eye-catching and engaging for the audience.
3: Making a 3D Animated Presenter induction needs far less time compared to filming, which takes days and days of the H&S manager’s time to plan and arrange the shoot locations, getting them tidy, ensuring workforce look clean and tidy and their PPE is correct and so on.
This is a big job and not to be underestimated. It’s easy to make mistakes without realizing until too late.
So if you need an induction video and are pressed to find the budget for a full-on film, or high cost 2D animation that accurately draws every one of your hazardous site areas
- think 3D Animated Presenter.
3D animation is cheaper and easier, and does the job in an effective way.
Every worker will understand and comply because you’ve explained everything clearly and attractively.
This is high value communication.

THE NSG STORY
This module was part of glass giant, NSG's new international contractor induction.
They'd made numerous health & safety videos before but always as film - never as safety animations.
Frankly the animated approach appealed as it meant less work on their part, compared to lengthy onsite filming.
From the moment we suggested it, NSG liked the cartoon idea as the audience impact was obvious.
Cost wise it worked out about the same.
Subsequently it was produced in Latin Spanish, Malay, Polish, Vietnamese and German.
Animation provokes disinterested audiences. We all learned this as children. It brings safety to life in a new way.
Whether you're explaining basic functionalities, telling the rules, showing a process, explaining the causes of accidents, or motivating individuals to avoid risk-taking, character animation offers you a fresh opportunity to reduce accidents and promote safe behaviour.

Explaining Site Rules is the dullest part of any induction presentation. Now it's never looked more interesting to employees
