THE STORY

We sent our filming crew out to Hong Kong to shoot this CEO talking heads video

- explaining the challenges & solutions that Chinese enterprises face when trying to reduce their high ongoing software expenses.

The solution was to use talking heads alongside animated infographics.

Combining animation & filmed interview enabled the audience to properly understand the technical explanation

- helping them to prevent wasted investment in the wrong places.

INTERVIEW VIDEO PRODUCTION

OR

CUTTING THROUGH THE WAFFLE TO DELIVER EFFECTIVE INTERVIEWS

THE 4 STEP INTERVIEW VIDEO PRODUCTION PROCESS

  • 1: CAREFUL PLANNING & design of questions to evoke the most effective responses

  • 2: COACHING OF INTERVIEWEES so they deliver at their best, without nerves

  • 3: METICULOUS GRADING to identify only the most telling clips

  • 4: EDITING NATURALLY for a real-feeling result that inspires your audience

Great interviews happen because you’re working with a great video team using the right approach to delivering interviews that actually make a difference -

- whether you’re filming a high level discussion, promoting a resounding client endorsement, highlighting a major project, delivering a CEO message, or capturing an inspiring sales talk.

The interview can be a standalone video, or part of larger multi-interview video storyline.

10 ways we make your interview look & sound great
even in dull locations

There are many reasons why there’s often little available by way of inspiring locations to interview in, so a key part of the video director’s job is to make the most of what’s already there - which may be just a spare office or reception area.

We solve this by focusing on what we can do to build up the individual - the valued interviewee - so the location becomes secondary in the viewer's eye.

Interview video example

HOW WE BUILD THE INDIVIDUAL

1: HAVE EVERYTHING PREPARED in advance, and timed so the interviewee isn’t hanging around waiting for a video crew to rig

2: RELAX THE INTERVIEWEE by taking their mind off the camera, always raising a smile

3: USE 2 CAMERAS for front and side shots, adding punch to the speaker’s delivery

4: USE TILTED CAMERAS for a quirky or engaging angle

5: LIGHT THEM to add grandeur, intimacy or intelligence

6: ENERGISE THEM so their words carry more weight

7: RECOGNISE WHEN THEY’VE SAID SOMETHING GREAT, and encourage them to elaborate on this key point for emphasis

8: INVOLVE THEM in what we’re doing so they don’t have time to get bored or worried

9: TAKE LOTS OF CUTAWAY SHOTS to help the audience relate better to the interviewee, eg, meeting with colleagues, taking a call, walking through a long office, doing something smart or digital

10: COSMETIZE THEM in the studio afterwards so they look younger and more appealing

3 steps to rescuing a mediocre interview

Your interview subjects aren’t professional. In fact only ⅓ of interviewees are naturally good at appearing on camera.

The rest waffle or repeat or look hesitant in varying degrees. Your interviewees may well be no different to this norm, even though they’re perfectly good speakers under normal circumstances.

So how do we turn a stuttering performance into a smooth convincing delivery that wins for you?

  • 1: USE MORE VOICE AND LESS FACE. Most spoken audio from interviews can be cut together to sound pretty good, by removing all the ums and ahs for a smoother delivery. The audio track can usually be made to sound great.

  • 2: DUB OVER OTHER VIDEO. We film & edit additional video over the processed interviewee audio, dubbing video over them with shots of them at work, or in meetings or demonstrating, or anything relevant and interesting. Or we can dub over graphic or caption screens, or stock library footage - in fact anything that minimizes their facetime on screen, while listening to their carefully edited smoothed voice.

  • 3: ONLY SHOW THE BEST BITES. With nervous interviewees, we edit so they’re only seen when they’re making their strongest points, delivering their punchlines.
