You’re a business, and you want to appear professional, this is a given.

You’ve invested in a professional website that reflects your brand image.

Using free video hosting for your website is not ideal. It cheapens your image.

By all means, put your web video on Youtube, but using it as the main video player on your website is a mistake.

Here’s a quick list of some of the negatives

You have their logo on your site

You’re stuck with someone else’s branding on your website – never good

People can click away from your site easily

Clicking on the video title will bring them away from your website into Youtube, amongst all your competitors videos.

It doesn’t add to the SEO of your website

A properly hosted video, implemented into a video site map, will.

Not much choice on video dimensions

If your video, or the space on your page isn’t exactly 16:9 – there are big black lines around the video.

It’s often blocked by company firewalls

This is critically bad if you’re b2b, imagine all the 1000s of business people who can’t access your video.

Stuck with a screem shot thumbnail

A graphic banner that says “click here to discover why this product will change your life forever” is a better Call-To-Action than a mere screen shot of the video.

No choice of player look

This is fine if you love silver, but what if your site is Purple?

Or what if you want less (or more) options on the player… No chance!

If you want your business website to look professional, using Youtube will not help! Always invest in professional business video hosting

By now, having a web video on your site is seen as the norm – there’s plenty of evidence that shows how effective it is.

Now, you’re looking to get on board and have a video on your homepage.

Here are a few tips to stop you making a mistake when picking your video production company.

You have a friend who can make video

We all know someone with a video camera and a bit of editing software. This does not neccessarily mean that the video will win you more sales.

The editing may be quite flashy and the camera shots good, but it’s rare in these cases that the script will be any good, and will actually make people want to enquire.

Your friend may be cheap, or even offering it for free – but they won’t have the full suit of tools that is needed to produce a web video.

Cheapest is not best

Browsing on the internet for a web video production company can be really overwhelming with sheer amount of companies, samples and price ranges out there.

Prices can really vary – you will see anything from £200 to £4000.

You may be tempted to stick with the cheapest in a bid to save money. But in the long term, it wont save you at all.

If you invest a little more, then you will receive more – it’s simple.

As a small example, you would never buy the absolute cheapest bottle of wine, would you?

They promise the world

If a company offer you everything you could imagine, and completion in 2 weeks. There’s probably something up.

This is especially so if the price is cheap.

They may promise everything, but if it’s a budget production – they’re bound to be skimping on something.

You want definitely want to see samples of previous work before signing any contracts.

If you think it sounds too good to be true, ask further questions! “What experience do you have?” “Can I speak to a previous customer” “What is the average turnaround?”

And if you’re feeling bold – “Why is it so cheap?”

A company who say they’ll handle everything alone

Producing a video is usually a big deal for a company, and you want to make sure it’s exactly what you need.

If the video company say – “We’re take care of it all, and send over a perfect video at the end” – don’t buy it.

You want to be involved in each stage of production, from script to storyboard to final edit.

If there is an error in the script for example and an important bit of information is missed, or is actually incorrect – then you wont know until the mistake has been carried right through to the end of production.

Errors will result in more delay and most likely more cost.

***

Hopefully these tips will help you next time you’re looking for a web video – and help you get a production that will win enquiries and not just save you money in the short term.

Click for examples of professional web video production

There are many reasons to make a 2 minute corporate video as opposed to the traditional 10 minute+ huge company overview.

Here’s a quick list of 10 reasons:

1. Nobody watches anything longer than 2 minutes

The viewer of 2012 has a busy lifestyle – their time is limited.

Get your message across in 2 minutes and they’ll thank you for it.

2. It’ll cost less than a 5 minute video

Less video runtime time equals less production costs.

I’m sure your accounts team would back me on this.

3. It fits into the average PowerPoint presentation

A business presentation should not just be a video – it should include at least a little something from, well, a presenter.

That’s not to say a video wouldn’t benefit a presentation. It would – considerably.

Just one that fits into its overall pace and structure, and doesn’t take over from the presentation itself.

4. It can be put into emails

Video in email marketing has been shown to increase click-through rates by over 96%. - Implix Email Marketing Trends Survey

Win that click with something engaging

5. It has to focus on essential information

This will give you less of a risk of boring your audience.

Get to the point – a 2 minute corporate video will stop you from waffling on.

6. It’s easier to make

The longer the video, the more complex the shoot.

And a complex shoot takes ages – and this is costly in both terms of money and your precious time.

The making of a 2 minute corporate video will be quick – and you get faster playback.

7. It’ll be a less complex video to update

Things change – as may your product or service.

If this happens, then you may have to update your video in the near future in order to keep it relevant.

It’s quick, easy and cheap to update a short video.

8. You can still use quotes from the CEO and Managing Director

Though to keep it to 2 minutes they’ll have to be lighter and more carefully thought out.

You’ll just have to make them get to the point!

9. It’s a more realistic viewing time for Smartphone and Tablet audiences

A small screen does not offer the best viewing experience.

It’s hardly epic – and neither should be the length of your corporate video.

If you want people on the move to watch it, make it 2 minutes long.

10. More chance it will go viral

They’re aren’t many long videos that go viral.

Before a viewer decides that they want to share a corporate video – they must first watch it. They are more likely to do this if it’s short in length.

And their friends – your potential customers – are more likely to want to watch it, like it and share it with their friends.

All you have to do is sit back and watch a marketing campaign unfold before your very eyes.

10 reasons to make a 2 minute corporate video

To summarise:

1. Nobody watches anything longer than 2 minutes

2. It’ll cost less than a 5 minute video

3. Fits into the average Powerpoint presentation

4. It can be put into emails

5. It has to focus on essential information

6. It’s easier to make

7. It’ll be a less complex video to update

8. You can still use quotes from the CEO and Managing Director

9. It’s a more realistic viewing time for Smartphone and Tablet audiences

10. More chance it can go viral

Birmingham Billiards require a suite of web videos to show off the high quality of their wide range of snooker and pool tables.

The current stage of the project is that of pre-production – more specifically location scouting and the delivery of the storyboard brief.

We asked Kevin Rossiter, the writer and director of the project, to provide an update on its current progress:

“Birmingham Billiards have approved 4 scripts – in fact, they seem really pleased with them. Last week we had a big storyboarding session that lasted for 3 hours. During this time I had the opportunity to look around their workshops and start figuring out the best way to film how a match standard snooker table is really made”.

Each video will be fronted by snooker legend Willie Thorne, mixed with a voiceover from Paul Brown.

What each web video will show

The aim of each video is:

> To show how Birmingham Billiards designs and builds each table on an individual basis

> To show the wide range of tables that Birmingham Billiards offer – from professional standard snooker tables to billiard dining tables

> And to show other snooker related products – such as snooker cues and snooker balls

The production of each web video is on schedule.

And the overall production process is going well.

This is a guest post by one of our in house motion graphic designers, Harry Finch – so you’ll excuse us for being quite geeky!

Element 3D – is a new After Effects plugin from Video Copilot that is still in the development stages (release date TBC).

But from the tiny morsels of info being leaked out, it looks like this plugin is going to be groundbreaking!

So what is Element 3D?

It’s a 3D based particle plugin. This means that instead of using an image to generate particles, as is available with other existing particle plugins, it uses 3D geometry (wireframe).

This is not to say that Element 3D cannot deal with images, far from it. But image based particle plugins are ten a penny these days

Where Element 3D is exciting, and correct me if I’m wrong on this, is that it is the first time we can render .obj files within After Effects efficiently, quickly and more importantly, make it look good!!!

Ok, we may still have to develop our .obj files within Cinema 4D, 3Ds max etc if we want anything other than the standard presets but we are now able to import them directly into After Effects without having to render out first.

But who’s to say that we’ll need to jump into Cinema 4D at all?

If we stick to just using the different model types e.g. cube, sphere etc in combination with the noise level, we can produce some interesting deformations of the wireframe and these deformations used in conjunction with the various material options, can produce some great results.

One example that struck a chord with me was a realistic example of water droplets, including realistic reflection and refraction of 3D lights that are rendered per object.

Now that’s quite a bit to get your head around so let me elaborate…

In the past, when we used image based particle generation, all the reflections would be located in the same position of each particle e.g. on the top of the water droplet.

With Element 3D, the reflection can be on the top of one particle whilst being on the bottom of another.

This gives a more realistic results e.g. if the light source is emitted from somewhere towards the side of a particle cluster.

Another cool feature, that only was available in 3D software until now, is the use of a fresnel.

By employing the fresnel function in combination with the bias control, we are able to control the levels of light fall off within the particle, allowing for realistic reflections.

That’s the reflection functions explained but what about the refraction functions?

Ever looked into a glass of water that has a straw in it and the straw looks like it’s bending?

This illusion is refraction, the bending of light.

As well as reflection controls, Element 3D has refraction controls.

Yet another tool to help you develop realistic 3D particles.

In Summary

The combination of quick rendering times, being able to work on .obj files directly in After Effects and some interesting material options, means that Element 3D is setting a new bench mark.

The only downside that I can think of is that a graphics cards with openGL capabilities is required.

But as openGl graphics cards have been widely available for a couple of years, and more recently become standard, this is not much of a set back.

Personally, I can’t wait to get my hands on a copy.

And here at Rossiter & Co, we think it will open up a whole new world of possibilities.

Come on Video Copilot…

…We want Element 3D!!!

Q: Over the years we have built up a collection of random images and video clips. We would like to combine them in order to create a 3 Minute Marketing video for our 2012 marketing campaign.

The purpose of the video will be to promote our company to prospective clients and investors – so it has to be of the highest quality.

Can you advise?

Head of Marketing
Interior Design Company
East London

A: Already having the footage you need for your Marketing Video – well that’s a major advantage.

Not only does it stop you from having to organise a video shoot, which can take time and money – it also gives you a solid foundation from which to work from.

A direction in which you can travel.

But in order to make a Marketing Video from a slideshow – and one that delivers excellence – you must first decide on its core message.

This will help you find what you’re looking for when searching through your mountain of already acquired footage.

And you’re a design company – so make sure the clips and images that you choose show off your exemplary design skills in a spectacular way.

If the footage is of a high standard, then it raises the bar for the processes that follow.

How you should put all of your footage together

A project such as this only has a post-production stage.

This involves

> editing

> the adding of visual effects and fixes

> the adding of sound effects

> voiceover

> and music.

The purpose of each one of these processes is to unite all of your random bits of footage in a way that makes a Marketing Video that has its own unique and distinguishable identity.

An identity that reflects the image and branding of your organisation and presents what you’re offering in a high standard way.

No matter how good your original footage may be, it could always do with a spit & polish.

Lighting can be tweaked and blemishes can be removed – do this and your Marketing Video will make whatever you design shine.

And when you’ve got the right look, there’s no better way of complementing this than by using the right sound.

A likeable voiceover allied to some beautiful music will guide the viewer into seeing – and appreciating – your very best work.

What’s the best way to make a classy Marketing Video for our design company

Get the best footage you have – whether it be video or still imagery – and get a professional post-production company to put it all together.

This will guarantee the delivery of a video that shows the brilliance of your company and its achievements.

Find out more about getting a marketing video and here to find out how you can use previously acquired footage to make a vidshort.

You’ve decided to use a web video as part of your new marketing campaign.

Good idea.

A web video is a great promotional tool – there’s no better way of delivering your marketing message. You just have to make sure it’s delivered in the right way.

The tone of your web video must be consistent – and it must reflect the unique selling points of your product or service in a way that’s easy to understand.

And one major thing that dictates the tone of a web video is its length.

A short web video

A short web video – one that’s around 30 seconds in length – needs to deliver a message that’s simple and to the point.

A video that tells the viewer:

> what you offer

> why it’s great

> and how they can get it.

For a short video, you have to Sell.

A long web video

A typically long web video is around 2 minutes in length.

Something that’s this long needs detail. For a video like this, you need to Tell.

If you Tell then you’ll engage the viewer – you don’t have to rely on them already knowing the details of your product or service.

And you’re not forcing an obvious pitch onto them – instead, you’re giving them the details they need to make a well informed decision.

After all, nobody likes to be sold to – we know what we want and we don’t need anybody to tell us otherwise!

Web video production – when to Tell not Sell

The Selling experience can be very exciting over a short period of time – but try Selling to somebody over a long period of time and they’ll find it oppressive.

Telling – on the other hand – can be long winded, and not beneficial to anyone who’s limited for time.

When deciding between making a

> Tell web video

> or a Sell web video

The questions you need to ask are:

> How much information does my product or service require?

> And how much time does my audience have?

When time is available – and needed – then Tell.

But if time is not available – but of the essence – then Sell.

Click here to find out which type of web video is right for you.

Text & messaging solution experts, VoiceSage, are intending to produce 3 Client Testimonial Videos, each one running at a length of 2 – 3 minutes. We’re currently mid way through production – and so far it’s looking great!

They want each testimonial to show:

> What they do for the client

> How they do it

> And – most importantly – that they can deliver a professional service on budget, on time and to a high standard.

Stages of production – filming

We have already shot one Client Testimonial Video. Its director, Kevin Rossiter, agreed to share his experiences:

“The difficulty with shooting any Testimonial Video is pinning the client down to a specific date for filming.

The video we’re doing at the moment is part of a suite for 3. To film the subject we used dedo lights – which are like halogen lights except they allow for a more intimate setting.

We also used a tilt on the camera – doing our best to avoid the ‘MD and potted plant look’.

The interview was filmed at the client’s place of work. This allowed us to film secondary footage like the workplace itself and the clients staff. In the final video these will be used as cutaways to make the interview more interesting to watch.”

Stages of production – editing

The editing of the first testimonial is currently taking place.

Victoria Rossiter – who is in charge of the edit and post-production – agreed to share some of her thoughts:

“I started editing with 30 minutes of footage – which has to be brought down to three and a half minutes. I’ve managed to get it to four and a half minutes, but losing the last minute is proving to be very difficult.

All of what the client says is relevant to the video. And it’s of a good quality – there are hardly any mistakes.”

The road to completion

Two more testimonials still need to be shot – and of course edited.

And the first testimonial is still in the early stages of post-production. Things like lighting effects and music still need to be added.

All in all though, the production of each VoiceSage Client Testimonial Video is going well and the project as a whole is on target.

Animated Web Video is a hot product.

It allows for a quirky yet informative video to be made quickly and cheaply.

If you have a brand that needs something fresh and appealing – whilst still remaining corporate – animated web video could be for you.

By using a tailor made character, you can connect with your prospective clients on a level that suits them.

I’m not saying that ‘real’ presenters are old hat, but with animated web video:

- your presenter can look however you want it to look!

- they can be in any environment you want!

- they can sound however you want them to sound!

And the best bit is that they don’t take a millenia to make – nor require a huge team to produce!

A character animation editor could turn around a 30 sec animated web video project within a month – easy!

Of course, this has the knock-on effect to price.

A 30 sec animated web video can be produced for just £799.

So if your latest product doesn’t quite suit a presenter video, and needs something a little more imaginative – why not try an animated web video.

With an animated web video on your website, the possibilities are endless!

Have a look on our site for a few of examples and more news on animated web video

We recently interviewed Paul Brown of LBS studios in the North West to find out a little more about what he does, his position within the voiceover industry and what he feels about working with Rossiter & Co.

Q: How long have you been in the voiceover business?

A: Just over 30 years. Me and two friends started the company in 1981, straight out of Durham University. We all had our own individual skills; my friends specialised in music and marketing respectively.

And I – of course – specialised in voiceovers.

We began by renting office above 10cc’s Strawberry Studios in Stockport – and it grew from there.

Q: What’s new for you?

A: There has been a great expansion of work lately. In the past, a voiceover would get most of their work through Radio and TV advertising.

But in recent years the demand has grown for online and multimedia work – things like e-learning and training.

So non-commercial voiceover work has increased dramatically and the market has become more varied.

This is largely due to the internet and the fact that most companies now want some sort of web based multimedia – whether that be a voiceover on its own or one used with a web video.

Q: Not including the different types of work you now do, what else has changed?

A: The introduction of recording via ISDN lines – something that took place in the mid 1990’s – has made my work based travel almost obsolete.

Whereas in the past I could only do 3 recordings in a day, I can now do 23 recordings in a day! This is because I’m not having to drive to different locations all over Britain – I can do everything from one location.

Q: What do you like about what you do?

A: I like the fact that voiceover work is so varied. One very diverse day springs to mind: in the morning I did the voiceover for the launch of a nuclear submarine – in the afternoon I did an advert for toilet rolls!

And if “a little knowledge is a dangerous thing”, then I’d be the most dangerous man in the world! What I mean by that is that I’ve acquired numerous bits of knowledge from lots of different assignments.

Q: Where will people have heard you?

A: I’ve done over 100,000 radio commercials. I’ve also done a lot of transport based work – such as Manchester Airport and lots of various ferry companies.

If you’ve ever left the country, then you’ve probably heard my voice.

Q: What’s it like working for Rossiter & Co?

A: Rossiter & Co make the work I have to do very easy and straightforward – They don’t faff about – they know how to present a script to get the results they want while minimising the margin for error. You’d be surprised how rare that is.

Click here to find out more about LBS and here to find out more about how Rossiter & Co use voiceover.

Last week I gave you the first 3 of 5 ways to identify your web video’s Remarkable Proposition, which you can find here

I hope you’re ready for the other 2

4. Get the feature benefits right

The feature benefits that you put in your web video should suit each individual viewer profile.

This can be tricky.

Your product or service may have just 1 feature benefit – or it may have 10.

For a web video, you ideally need 3.

The question is – how to I identify them?

And the answer – you pick the 3 that stop the pain.

And what’s the pain?

The pain is the frustration the average web surfer is experiencing in trying to find what they’re looking for.

Let’s just say that to stop it, they can only:

> type 3 things into Google

> and your product or service can offer these 3 things.

What are they?

Got them? Good.

Now put these feature benefits into your web video.

5. Get a good call to action – or CTA

A pretty obvious point – but something that you should never forget.

Your web video should always finish by telling the viewer how to contact you, your sales team or – even better – how to actually purchase or subscribe to your product or service.

This is a tried and proven sales technique.

The last thing you want to do is make your viewer want to buy and then leave them wanting!

Again, I know I’m stating the obvious, but you’d be surprised by how many people fall into this trap!

5 ways to identify your web video’s Remarkable Proposition

To summarise, these are:

1. Check out your competitors

2. Use the least amount of words possible

3. Make it repeatable

4. Get the feature benefits right

5. Get a good call to action – or CTA

Click here to find out more about how to identify and show your Remarkable Proposition through a web video.

Q: Animated Presenter Or Video Presenter – Which One Should I Use For My Web Video?

Chief Financial Officer
Legal Advice Company
Manchester

A: It depends on your product.

Presenters are good for demonstrating physical things, like gadgets or machinery – but if your product is abstract in its nature – then an animation would be better.

What you’re trying to sell is a service.

Visually speaking, it’s not something that’s easy to describe. There is no ‘physical’ example of what you provide.

So you have to be very descriptive – you have to take something you can’t see and put it on the screen.

If you’re going to rely on words, then you have to use a presenter.

This would be fine if what they had to say was short and sweet – but for a video like this they’ll have to be detailed and long winded.

The audience of 2012 – and any future year – will find that boring.

A presenter will just go on and on – trying in vain to describe something that can’t be expressed in words.

So let’s consider the use of an animated presenter.

An animation is entertaining – it’s not something you see everyday.

And everything about it – all of its details from its movements to its features – are descriptive.

A presenter can only use words – an animation can use actions

An animated web video can tell an informative yet simple story – one that both educates and entertains.

It’s difficult for a presenter to:

> act out a process that could be considered ‘elaborate’

> take something serious and make it entertaining

> or do anything that’s physically impossible!

Wanting a presenter to break the laws of physics would be asking a bit too much!

An animation, on the other hand, can show just about anything – it has no visual limitations.

It’s descriptive by its very nature – and it can be shaped to be anything you want it to be.

On the downside – it can lack the warmth of a presenter, who can give both personality and a face to a product – but only if that product is self-descriptive and easy to understand.

Something that’s complicated – or just plain boring – needs an animation to bring it to life.

And – most importantly – to make it memorable.

Animated presenter or video presenter – which one should I choose for my web video?

If you’re trying to sell a simple product then a presenter is a simple choice to make.

Presenters are a safe bet. They engage with the audience and are easy to shoot.

Click here to find out more about using a presenter with your web video.

But if you’re offering something more abstract – and you want your web video to feature something that’s completely different and makes it stand out from the crowd – then an animated presenter is the way to go.

It will convert your audience to your way of thinking.
