Full script and storyboard service

We combine our know-how with yours to deliver a compelling video storyline. This is part of our creativity package.

It will ensure your induction video is genuinely motivating and informative, and not merely a mind-dulling repetition of the rules.

We can give you at least 4 ideas to make your contractor induction stand out from the crowd, each with reference to your major hazards.

3 day shoot

3 days video shoot is best, because 2 days usually results in a “rushed” look. A 3 day shoot will ensure you deliver quality footage that’s worth watching.

It’s important that your contractors are motivated to behave safely. So we start by thinking of your Contractors as people, who watch and like television, and are influenced by it.

To this end we give them a piece of television that they can watch and like – and be influenced by. This shows itself in the details.

For example, instead of a bare caption “No mobile phones while walking”, we can show a contractor receiving an incoming call while walking with colleagues, then pausing and standing aside to take the call while colleagues walk on. Their “safe thinking” will register on their face.

2 actors to play the part of 2 contractors

Using actors avoids using your own staff who frequently look wooden and amateur on video.

Also, when a number of different takes are required, actors can repeat each take exactly the same, because they’re trained to do this – unlike your own workforce who will give unstructured camera performances.

Actors will help your video shoot will run more quickly and smoothly, and your audience will see the difference in both in dynamism and quality.

Taking this further, actors will create a storyline for your video, elevating it from a mere recital of the rules into a dynamic dialogue that your audience will relate to.

You can use this to emphasise key points, for example, Method Statements or Permits.

Editing, captioning and titling

Fine editing, captioning and titling will ensure a smooth television look to your video. It will avoid the “stuck-on” look that many voiceover videos have.

Remember: Safety is not second best. So your video shouldn’t be second best. Great editing will help ensure this.

Voiceover as required

20% to 80% use of voiceover in an induction video is the best balance to retain audience interest. The remaining percent should be live dialogue, creating contrast – and interest.

For your voiceover artist you can choose between male or female, younger or older, and regional or ethnic accent.

Voiceover can speak authoritatively, compassionately, relatingly, inspiringly – all geared towards increasing compliance with your safe systems of work.

Post production

Most company premises are busy workplaces and don’t always look perfect on camera. Yet on your induction video you want everything to look its best.

Post production will enhance the “look” of your contractor video so your premises look cleaner and brighter. And the people in your video will look brighter and sharper.

When contractors see a better looking place, they feel more motivated.

Live sound, music and audio production

Good sound will put the audience right in the middle of the video. It will give a “live” on-the-job feel.

A great music theme will also make your induction video more inspiring. People respond to good quality music, so we make sure your video has it.

We skilfully mix your audio to blend live sound, live voice, studio voiceover and music into a credible soundtrack that will automatically make your contractor or new starter audience sit up and listen.

Delivery as DVD, MP4 and video stream

You can deliver from a DVD player, or a laptop, projector and screen, or online. You can deliver when contractors or new starters first come on site.

You can additonally arrange for contractors to view your video prior to them coming on site.

You can make viewing the video as much a part of working for you as completing a Method Statement.

Contractor Induction Video – The Importance of Creativity

Let’s be candid and start off by saying that many contractor induction videos are extremely dull, with limited effectiveness.

This is because they rely on indifferent hurried shooting and droning voiceover, usually accompanied by the kind of music you hear in a lift.

They look and sound cheap, and impress no one.

Yet some contractor videos succeed in being engaging, and genuinely encourage the contractor to work safely.

The difference usually lies in the creative approach.

At Rossiter & Co we look to develop a theme with you, a storyline capable of capturing your audience’s imagination on a wet Wednesday morning in a training room, security lodge or hut.

Here are just a few suggestions. There are many more besides:

  • Showing a “day in the life video” with two contractor characters narrating their story (and the rules!) as they go
  • Building a story around an undercover news investigation into unsafe behaviour (with a safety positive ending guaranteed!)
  • An accident investigation video that follows the progress of a real life accident victim and colleagues, coupled with messages that reinforce how the accident could have been prevented in the first place, eg, Danger Zones around Moving Vehicles, Working from Heights, Use of Gloves
  • Dramatising safety incidents. This can be done using 3D animation on DVD, which allows you to show what you think happened while avoiding degrading the victim and colleagues
  • Showing a presenter-led walk-through. Or two presenters as an attention grabbing video double act!
  • Using contractor voxpop interviews to show consensus and generate discussion with behavioural issues, promoting a safe behaviour focussed culture

These are just a few ideas. The important issue is to avoid the “droning voiceover” syndrome through use of a creative video storyline to capture the imagination.

This will result in greater attention being paid to the induction video – and, ultimately, greater compliance and less accidents.

We want to see safer behaviour as much as you!
