What does the Best Idea look like?

There’s no real answer to this.

But often the best idea will often be:

  • A Quick Fix solution - stop hurting and start gaining - fast
  • An 80-20 solution - don’t sweat the detail, just go for the biggest benefit to the most people - asap.
Go for the biggest benefit to the most people

Both these approaches are often eminently practical.

Neither pretend to solve all the world’s ills.

But they do fix things quickly for the most possible people.

And this will do just fine.

You needn’t expect the great idea to be a timeless remedy for all things.

Just hit the Hot Spot!

If someone feels that the Hot Spot solution is incomplete for them, then listen politely to their objections and build in their ideas as Phase 2 or Phase 3 of the Vision.

Many people feel much happier approving a phased implementation when their thinking is incorporated as part of Phase 2.

Phasing means Yes - you’ve got your buy-in for what needs doing today.

John ... you have a good point and we ought to do it. If we earmark it for Phase 2 it will fit nicely.

Karen ... I agree with your point, but we mustn’t let it slow up the main thrust or we’ll never get this idea off the ground. We should discuss in more detail once we’ve got Phase 1 in place.

James, you’re one of the great refiners of ideas. Thank you for your suggestion.

Footnote: You’ll notice I’ve continually referred to the idea and not your idea. This is deliberate. The idea might not necessarily be yours, even though it might well be.

Your special skill is to divine when the great idea occurs and catch the lightning.

Exercise 20:

Always look for the Quick Fix.

Always look for the idea that brings the most benefit the fastest.

Implement the less useful ideas as Phase 2 for now.

Avoid hurting anyone’s feelings when their idea is rejected.

You can do this by practicing aloud the phrases above. Saying a thing the right way matters.
