We must have a Strategy - or must we?

A common sense plan which sets out objectives in a timely and organised way

The Strategy word is one of the most abused words in the language of business and organisations.

Experience shows that many so-called strategies make things worse by overcomplicating things with too much crystal ball gazing.

Strategic thinking often means making situations fit an intellectual rigour, rather than with the real demands of life.

Infinitely preferable is a common sense plan which sets out objectives in a timely and organised way.

If you have doubts about strategy, then ask yourself: Two years ago, could you have predicted your present circumstances and position in anything more than general terms?

Seriously - look back over your last 2 years. Did you honestly predict your present position and circumstances?

Rarely do we get it right. But it’s not that we get it wrong either.

Mostly, life continues to grow and we thrive on its challenges.

So where does this come into successful business meetings.

Avoid strategy.

Use Plan.

Get the horse before the cart and not the other way round.

Make plans, build plans. Achieve this quarter’s goals. Achieve this year’s goals.

Become a builder of plans-that-work.

If you make things happen in your meetings, then any long term plans will become obvious.

Make plans instead.

Have goals.

Look after the plans and the strategy will take care of itself.

Develop your Organising Power.

Exercise 21:

Avoid letting people use the strategy word.

Most of the time this thinking is not real, and does harm.

Stick with Plan instead. Focus on scoring goals.

How can you do this in your meetings? Plan how to do this.
