Don't look greedy

Recognition and responsibility are important

Recognition and responsibility are important, and are probably top of your list of desires already. But acting only for increased recognition and responsibility is not the best motive for success, or necessarily the best reason to attend a meeting.

If you act only for your own recognition or increased responsibility, you’ll soon be spotted as an eager-beaver by everyone else, and they’ll think of you as greedy.

Remember: Everyone is greedy. This is normal. This is why most of us try to ensure that it doesn’t look too obvious. By contrast, people who make their greed too obvious will quickly get known as greedy types, and be treated - or disliked - accordingly.

The best way to avoid becoming known as a greedy type is to attend meetings with the intention of helping progress the situation - and not simply to help progress yourself.

This is a subtle but crucial distinction.

Your main objective is that you’re looking to help, to make a difference.

Think about how you’re going to score goals, or provide goals for others.

Don’t dwell on being lionised by the crowd.

Exercise 7:

Do you ever look greedy:

  • Often
  • Sometimes
  • Almost never

Explain your choice in 24 words or less.

If your answer is Often then you need to work on this. Ask a confidential friend or your mentor for advice.
